I am honored to be selected as one of the 36 high school students to participate in the the 2024-2025 Young Scholars Program of the American College of Cardiology, a year-long educational and mentorship program that introduces young students to cardiovascular medicine.
This past weekend, I attended Camp Cardiac in Washington, D.C., an annual ACC event where Young Scholars learn hands-on skills and network with peers and established medical professionals. From mastering hands-on CPR and First Aid to exploring echocardiography and discussing the latest research on demographic and economic disparities in heart disease, every activity opened my eyes to what science and medicine was like in the real world. Previously, I had only read about the techniques and various medical pathways in online articles. So being there felt familiar. But being fully immersed in these activities and discussing medicine with so many scientists made this whole career feel…real.
The atmosphere was electric, and I felt inspired. Discussing the latest breakthroughs with ACC peers and fellow offered me fresh perspectives and innovative ideas I had not considered alone. When passionate minds congregate to discuss cutting-edge research, innovative treatments, and emerging technologies, each person becomes an extension of everyone else’s knowledge, creating a thrilling atmosphere of inspiration and discovery.
The path to medicine is challenging and long, but we gain collective strength from celebrating scientific curiosity and supporting each other’s aspirations. I hope to stay in touch with all these students and mentors!
