A Prescription of Bach Music

Have you ever found yourself tossing and turning throughout the night? Maybe you have tried to search for a playlist of calming music. I certainly have. But what is it about this type of music that makes it effective for relaxation and cognitive function?

Research studies have shown that classical music has a positive effect on our overall mental health. Some studies have shown promising effects of classical music on memory recall and cognitive performance. While not a cure (yet), it might benefit patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Additionally, the feelings of tranquility and enhanced mood from listening to classical music could be attributable to the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is associated with feelings of reward and pleasure.

I definitely feel that classical music can slow down my heart rate and distress me. The next time you have a restless sleep, try listening to some soothing music as part of your bedtime routine. One particularly effective genre for me is Baroque music, specifically compositions by Bach. Every time I listen to his music, the rhythmic, moderate tempo and mathematical structure of his compositions magically synchronize my mind and body, slow down racing thoughts, and induce relaxation.

In case you want to give it a try, here is Bach’s French Suite 6 Allamande 1 in E major played by yours truly. Try listening this piece for 30 days, and let me know if you sleep better. Message me if you need a refill 🙂
